DHS to Discuss Plans for Foster Care System

DHS will meet at 10:00 on Monday, November 14, to reveal the first phase of its plan to address the growing number of children in the state’s foster care system.

There are more than 5,000 kids in foster care in the state and only 1,600 foster families. Governor Asa Hutchinson called the foster care situation a crisis last year, and since then the number of foster children has increased.

Jamie and Allie Barker have recently become foster parents, and they say it’s not difficult.

“The only thing you have to do is give them a safe place to stay and a loving home. As corny as it sounds it really is all these kids need and its easy to love a kid that comes into your home,” said Jamie Barker. The Barkers hope their story will influence others to help foster kids.

The new DHS director, Cindy Gillsepie, will be at the reveal Monday morning to explain what the plan means for children and families in the state.
