Family Travels Across the Country, ‘Roadschooling’ Their Children

BENTONVILLE, AR — One California family is taking a year long road trip to try a new form of homeschooling on the road, or “roadschooling.” The family made a stop in Bentonville Tuesday afternoon to visit with Central Park Elementary students.

“We go city to city, town to town, interviewing these kid change makers, learning about their projects,” said father, Matt Webb.

Traveling around the United States for the past seven months, the family looks for kids that are making a difference. On Tuesday, the Webbs stopped in Bentonville at Central Park Elementary, where Mrs. Harvey’s third grade class is raising money to provide clean water to third world countries.

“The thing that intrigued us the most I think, was their work with clean water, that’s a project that they are working on right now that they are starting to grow,” Webb said.

The Webbs are creating a documentary with all the change makers they have met on their journey. The list is already pretty long.

“We’ve been on the road now for seven months, we’ve interviewed over 40 change makers in 30 states.”

The Webbs say homeschooling on the road, or “roadschooling” gives them a richer learning experience.

“It’s a little different than a regular classroom, we started homeschooling last year before we hit the road. Instead of reading about history, we go and experience history first hand. We do a lot of science first hand, a lot of museums,” Webb said.

From road schooling to documentary film-making, this family says they do it all as a team.

“It’s a family project, they help us choose which kids we wanted to interview, and we all work together.”
