Fayetteville Hosts ‘Families Belong Together’ Rally

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KFTA) — Demonstrators are gathering across the country, including in Fayetteville, to protest President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.

These rallies come nearly two months after the Trump administration implemented its “zero tolerance” policy toward undocumented immigrants, causing the separation of thousands of children from their parents.

“We all know someone affected, and it’s time to get off the sidelines,” said Blanca Estevez, a co-organizer of the “Families Belong Together” rally.

The Fayetteville town center drew a crowd of people demanding that families belong together.

“I do hearby proclaim Saturday June 30, 2018, as Families Belong Together day in Fayetteville, Arkansas,” Mayor Lioneld Jordan said.

“To separate someone from their family, that’s horrific,” said Rev. Jim Parrish, minister at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Fayetteville

Protesters have three demands. Those demands include reuniting separated migrant families immediately, the government to end family detentions and an end to the Trump administrations “zero tolerance” policy.

“We need to step up, we need to be louder, we need to be more active but we also need to keep that message of unity that message of peace.” said protestor Eric Hernandez-Trujillo.

Eric Hernandez-Trujillo says his parents waited two decades to receive citizenship.

“It took not 21 years but until I was of age to go and put my voice and put my documentation in to get them their stay,” Hernandez-Trujillo said.

That’s why he hopes the narrative towards undocumented immigrants changes.

“These are family members, these are parents, these are grandparents that are children that are scared and don’t know what’s going on, they’re just trying to find a better life.”
