Wednesday, October 12 is crosswalk safety awareness day.
It is a city, and state, law that drivers must yield to pedestrians in both marked and unmarked crosswalks, according to the Fayetteville Police Department. The department also said it is the pedestrian’s responsibility to look both ways before crossing.
Fayetteville Mayor, Lioneld Jordan will be kicked off the event Wednesday morning at the corner of Lafayette and College Ave., by helping children cross the street. The City of Fayetteville Community Services staff will be on the Fayetteville Square helping people cross the street throughout the day. UAPD and other University leaders will be at the intersection of Maple St. and Garland Ave. Fayetteville Public School administrators will visit random crosswalks throughout the day. School resource officers will be at the light by the Fayetteville High School on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. during the lunch hour. The Fayetteville Fire Department will also be out at random intersections during the day.
