A Fayetteville middle school student has been diagnosed with pertussis, commonly referred to as whooping cough.

Alan Wilbourn with Fayetteville Publlic Schools issued a news release Tuesday stating that a student at McNair Middle School was diagnosed with pertussis, a highly contagious disease involving the respiratory tract caused by a bacterium called Bordetella pertussis.

“Immunization records will be reviewed by the school nurse to see if an additional dose of pertussis vaccine is needed. You will be notified if your child needs this vaccine,” the news release states.

Wilbourn said that all students should be observed for respiratory symptoms for the next 14 days.

“Anyone with a severe cough should be excluded from school and evaluated by a physician,” Wilbourn said.
