We’ve all heard the horror stories, doctor’s performing the wrong procedure or foreign objects left inside a surgical patient, but medical mishaps are a serious issue.
A new study from doctors at Johns Hopkins, suggests medical errors may kill at least 250,000 people a year, making it the third leading cause of death in the United States. Previous studies have put the number much lower, from 44,000 to 195,000.
One reason there’s such a wide range of numbers is because accurate data on these kinds of deaths is surprisingly sparse. The doctors behind the study hope their analysis will lead to real reform in the health care system they argue is letting patients down.
