Illegal Robocallers May Be Slapped with Harsher Penalties

FOX24

Some robocalls are already a crime, including ones from companies you haven’t given written permission to get calls from. But Senate bill 514 would change these calls from a Class B misdemeanor to a Class D felony.

The bill passed in the Arkansas Senate unanimously on Monday, March 25.

A robocall is a phone call from a seemingly familiar number. It may have your area code or even the same first three digits of your phone number.

The Federal Communications Commission stated advanced technology has made these calls more common making it a top consumer complaint.

Representative Clint Penzo is a sponsor of the bill and said these calls are more than just an inconvenience.

“There are people out there that are trying to take advantage of people and actually financially harm them,” Representative Penzo said. “That’s probably the most important part about this.”

A Class D felony is punishable by up to six years in prison or a $10,000 fine.

If you get a call, you can file a complaint with the FCC here
