Looking into Earthquake Insurance in Oklahoma

MIAMI, OK. — “It’s just not built into our daily routine of, ‘okay here’s an earthquake, we need to make sure the house is earthquake proof.’ You know, what does that look like?” said P.J. Shyers, Miami resident.

Many Oklahoma residents are concerned about the frequent number of earthquakes occurring within the past few years.

“From what I’ve read is that it’s probably caused by the oil companies fracking and trying to get the last drop of the oil out of the earth. If off-sets the balance,” said Rick Evans, Quapaw resident.

“I’m very concerned that something has changed, because we’re having so many more of them,” said Jane Osborn, Miami resident.

Now, even more people are looking into earthquake insurance.

“There’s lots of factors, but the damage, it could be anywhere from glasses falling out of the cupboard, to major structural damage to your house,” said Glenda Longan, Miami Emergency Management Director.

Agents say earthquake insurance is an additional $60 to $100. Agencies send out adjusters to check out the homes before an earthquake hits.

“Make sure that there wasn’t any pre-existing damage to the homes, so that if an earthquake were to happen, they have that coverage on their homeowners. That way we can go up there and say, ‘yup, this is what it was caused from,” said Jim Rexwinkle, Miami State Farm Agent.

The Miami Emergency Management Department says to keep an inventory of everything you own.

“Everybody has a cell phone. Take pictures of your house, take video of your house, and then that way you’ve got a good record of what you have, where it was in your house, and the condition of your house,” said Longan.

The Miami Emergency Management Department says during an earthquake, it’s important to drop to the ground, take cover, and hold on to a sturdy desk or table.
