Northwest Arkansas held different events on Monday to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The University of Arkansas hosted a vigil to honor King in the Union Verizon Ballroom. Hundreds attended the vigil, including students and members of the NWA Martin  Luther King, Jr. Council. Students spoke about King’s legacy, performed spoken word pieces and even sang songs honoring the civil rights leader.

Arkansas student Demario Chambers said he believes everyone needs to be reminded of “where we have come and where we are going.”

Arvest Bank also held a reception to honor the spirit and memory of King. Washington County Judge Joseph Wood was the guest speaker at the event.

The event included the Holcomb Honor Choir and essay winner from the Yvonne Richardson Youth Center. Arvest hopes hosting this event will motivate kids to learn from King’s teachings.
