Northwest Arkansas Dispatcher Gets Call of a Lifetime, Helps Deliver Baby

When a dispatcher answers the phone, they never know what emergency they’ll encounter.

One Springdale dispatcher was shocked when she heard what was happening on the other side of the line, on September 19th.

“When I saw that little crown come out, that’s when I called 911,” said Victor Velazquez, who delivered Son with Help of Dispatch. “I said, hey my wife is having a baby.”

The Velaquez’ were ready to welcome their third child to the family, but not quite this way.

“It was a little scary, and I felt like I needed to get across the point that Victor needed to come and catch the baby now,” said Courtney Velazquez who’s son was born over dispatch.

That’s where Springdale dispatcher Monica Deason comes in.

“We just got right down to business, and started delivering the baby,” said Deason.

“It’s amazing how much courage you can find when your family depends on it, and having someone on the other line who’s calm, collected and guiding me really helps,” said Victor. “Monica was great. She answered. Keep me in focus. Keep me on track. Helped me to do what was next, and the baby got here.”

Deason said she knew baby Steven had arrived when she heard him crying.

“It’s the best feeling in the world,” said Deason. “Hey, I helped bring a life into the world. And to hear him crying in the background I was just like, aw.”

Deason and the Velazquez’ said the bond between them will never be broken.

“I wasn’t there, but I was there. I was helping them through it, and talking them through it, and got to be there whenever they first saw their baby for the first time,” said Deason.

Weeks later, the strangers finally met in person brought together by a bundle of joy.

“It was really nice to be able to see the baby and be able to meet Victor and his wife, and be able to put a face with the voice on the phone,” said Deason.

“She’ll always be a part of this. She’ll be a part of this story every time I tell it,” said Victor.

Deason stayed on the line as paramedics arrived, and baby Steven is now as healthy as can be.

The family said they will continue to keep Deason in the loop with Steven’s life.
