A decade ago, Arkansas beat Alabama in double overtime. And because of this win, a Springdale family had to follow through with a big promise.
Mike Luttrell and his family have always been Razorback fans, but he didn’t really think the Hogs would beat Bama all those years ago.
His children were begging him for a puppy, and he made a bet with them that if Arkansas beats Vanderbilt and Alabama he will give them a dog.
Luttrell remembers the day clearly. He said, “So now Alabama is up by 6. The Razorbacks end up scoring..get the extra point to win by one point..I’m excited that the Razorbacks win and my kids are going crazy cause they finally get a puppy.”
Right after the win, the family went and picked out their new family member. But, the issue was what they would name it.
Luttrell instantly knew what they should call him. He explained, “So we get the dog, and we’re having this debate of what are we going to name the dog. And we we’re trying all these cute Razorback names or things about the hogs, and finally I decided..we should name the dog Tiffin.”
The name Tiffin comes from the Alabama kicker Leigh Tiffin. Tiffin missed three field goals, and in the second overtime the extra point. Basically handing the win over to the Hogs.
Luttrell said, “Because really this dog would not be here as part of our family if Leigh Tiffin wouldn’t have missed all those kicks that day.”
On the 10-year anniversary what is Luttrell thinking of betting this time around? A pony.
