One City Aims to Increase Resident Safety

FOX24

One city in Northwest Arkansas wants to increase the safety of its residents during severe weather.

Washington County Judge Joseph Wood and State Representative Charlene Fite both attended the ribbon cutting and grand opening of the Washington County City of Evansville safe room/storm shelter on Friday, May 11.

The safe room is located next to the Evansville community center and volunteer fire department on highway 59.

The city served breakfast at 8:15 a.m.

In 2017, Washington County, with the assistance of the Northwest Arkansas economic development district applied for the FEMA grant enabling the county to construct a safe room in the Evansville community.

Washington County received just under 30,000 from FEMA and contributed an additional $9,700.

The safe room will provide protection for the residents of Evansville during severe storms and natural disasters.
