Orman Defeats Webb to Become Bentonville Mayor Following Heated Race

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (KFTA) — Stephanie Orman defeated Jim Webb in the runoff election for the office of Bentonville mayor following a heated, contentious race.

Votes from 100 percent of precincts show that Orman, a current Bentonville City Council member, claimed 3,226 votes (63 percent) to Webb’s 1,873 votes (37 percent).

Orman and Webb went into a runoff election after a close general election in which Orman claimed 40 percent of the vote and Webb 42 percent. The general election Bentonville mayor race included three other candidates: Terry Shannon, John A. Skaggs and Charlie Turner.

Orman’s victory follows two controversial issues in which Orman made allegations against Webb and his campaign.

In mid-November, Skaggs told KNWA that Webb offered him an administrative position if he endorsed him for mayor, an offer which is a direct violation of the Arkansas Code.

Skaggs said that he denied the offer and told KNWA he considered it “inappropriate.” After losing the election, Skaggs endorsed Orman.

Webb denied the allegation and told KNWA that he was simply offering Skaggs the opportunity to work alongside Webb on various city projects.

However, the first controversy emerged late in the general election race when Orman called into question the origin of a large portion of Webb’s campaign money.

Orman held a press conference, taking to task money that the Republican State Leadership Committee contributed to Webb’s campaign. Orman described that committee as a Political Action Committee (PAC).

Webb’s campaign has received $41,729 in total contributions from the Republican State Leadership Committee, according to Republican State Leadership Committee independent expenditure reports.

Webb that while he does not know the Republican State Leadership Committee, he was happy to have been identified by a group that supports Republican leaders at the state and local level.
