Prairie Grove’s half-percent sales tax increase takes effect on Monday, April 1.
The change was adopted by voters in November and increases the sales tax from 2.25 percent to 2.75 percent.
Revenue collected from the tax would go to additional personnel for the police and fire departments.
FOX 24 previously spoke with Director of Public Works, Larry Oelrich, who said the need for firefighters has grown in the community.
“Our fire department has been primarily a volunteer fire department for many years,” Oelrich said. “It’s getting harder and harder to find volunteers and in a growing community it’s just time to look at more full-time firemen.”
Oelrich also said the city’s population has boomed in recent years, and that boom is the reason the sales tax is needed.
