Pryor Center to Rejoin Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The David and Barbara Pryor Center has officially rejoined the University of Arkansas J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences.

The Pryor Center was started by Sen. David Pryor and his wife Barbara in 1999 as a part of the Department of History, with the goal of preserving the cultural heritage of the state of Arkansas through the collection of video and audio recordings to share with students, scholars and citizens.

A donation from the Tyson Family Foundation in 2005 allowed the Pryor Center to become a part of the University of Arkansas Libraries Special Collections and to take on a new name: The  David and Barbara Pryor Center for Arkansas Oral and Visual History.

From 2007 to 2009, the center was administered by Special Collections, but it was moved under the jurisdiction of the Chancellor’s Office in 2009, according to the UofA website.

The Pryor Center is a natural fit in Fulbright College, and members of the UofA are looking forward to advancing academic opportunities through the resources the center affords.

“This is the right move at the right time for the Pryor Center,” said UA Chancellor Joe Steinmetz. “Fulbright College has students and faculty with a wide range of interests who will directly benefit from closer access to the oral and visual history archives already produced by the Pryor Center. These students and faculty also have expertise that can help advance and amplify the Pryor Center’s mission to collect, preserve and connect.”

The Pryor Center is home to about 70 video interviews, with transcripts of hundreds more.

The center also houses the KATV archive, which contains some 26,000 hours of film and video documenting 50 years of the day-to-day history of Arkansas, all needing to be digitized and made easily accessible online.

Chancellor emeritus Dan Ferritor will be serve as a transition advisor to help facilitate the center’s integration into Fulbright College and launch new programs.
