Trafalgar Road Fire Affects Nearby Pets

FOX24

The Trafalgar Road fire often referred to as the stump dump in Bella Vista, is now raising more questions about its effects on the community’s health, this time on the animals.

While prolonged health issues are not yet certain, Dr. Leeth Harper with the Village Pet Hospital in Bella Vista said he believes he has seen animals that have side effects directly related to the hazardous fire off of Trafalgar Road.

“I’ve already taken my dog to the vet 3 times, ” said resident Kelly Strain.

Strain lives less than a quarter mile to the Trafalgar Road fire, he said his dog and many other neighbors pets have been experiencing health problems.

“She’s got a growth on her nose, my neighbor said that’s how her dogs started,” Strain said.

Strain has put his home up for sale due to the smell and health concerns but never expected his pet to be affected.

For Dr. Leeth harper, Where ever humans may have concern pets should also be taken into consideration.

“So anything that is not going to be good for humans is definitely not going to be good for pets,” Dr. Harper said.

Dr. Harper said the amount of exposure could make a difference for pets as they breathe in more air than a normal adult.

“Pets would be considered to be more like children in the sense that they have a higher respiratory rate, which means they are breathing a little faster and bringing in more air,” Dr. Harper said.

“I have to keep her inside just like I am, who’s going to protect her if  I can’t protect her. She doesn’t want to stay inside,” Strain said.

While the long-term effects are still looming, for now, strain says he’ll continue to keep his pet away from what he calls danger.

“She loves the outdoors and I just can’t let her outside.”

Governor Asa Hutchinson is set to have a private tour of the site tomorrow around 1 p.m. to see what can be done to resolve the situation in Bella Vista,
