March is national brain injury awareness month, which is why local doctors are working to provide specialized concussion care.
Advanced orthopedic specialists, also known as the ”Hogs Docs,” are offering specialized concussion care and are wanting people to know about the recent changes to concussion guidelines
Dr. Ramon Ylanan, a sports medicine physician and concussion specialist at AOS, said the ways to diagnose and treat concussions have gotten an upgrade and the new guidelines from the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine could help get athletes back in action sooner with improved treatment.
“Just like we rehab an ankle after an injury, there are protocols for rehab with concussions. That has really helped with the speed up the return to play, safety return, but allow people to return from concussions in ways that before they just had to wait it out,” Dr. Ylanan said.
AOS is offering a concussion care seminar Thursday night to inform attendees about the new concussion guidelines.
The free session kicks off Thursday, March 14 from 6-7 p.m. at Advanced Orthopedic Specialists, 3900 N. Parkview Drive, Fayetteville.
