Tyson Gets Fined by OSHA After Amputation at Texas Plant

FOX24

Tyson Foods was fined $263,498 by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration on Tuesday after an inspection identified two repeated and 15 “serious” violations.

According to a news release, a worker’s finger was amputated at a Texas plant. When investigators went to the plant, other violations were found including failure to ensure proper safety guards on moving machinery, higher than permissible carbon dioxide levels and not training employees on hazards with peracetic acid, according to the release.

“Tyson Foods must do much more to prevent disfiguring injuries like this one from happening,” said Dr. David Michaels, Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA. “As one of the nation’s largest food suppliers, it should set an example for workplace safety rather than drawing multiple citations from OSHA for ongoing safety failures.”

OSHA also cited Tyson for not making employees wear protective eyewear and for not separating compressed gas cylinders of oxygen and acetylene while in storage. According to the release, these are repeat violations; Tyson has been cited for these violations in 2012 and 2013, respectively.

Tyson has 15 days to comply with the citations, request an informal conference with OSHA’s area director or contest the citations.

Tyson released the following statement on the citations:

We never want to see anyone hurt on the job, which is why we’re committed to continual improvement in our workplace safety efforts. We fully cooperated with OSHA’s inspection of our Center plant and intend to meet with OSHA officials in an effort to resolve these claims. Our company employs almost 500 health and safety professionals who are involved in such areas as safety training, safety audits, ergonomics and health care. We also have programs and policies to help protect our employees. For more information on Tyson Foods’ health and safety efforts, click here.
