An upcoming election looks to help fund the Marshals Museum in Fort Smith.

The City of Fort Smith is holding a special election on March 5 for voters to decide whether to approve a one-cent sales tax. If passed, it will be in effect from July 2019 to March 2020.

The U.S. Marshals Museum leadership team spoke to the League of River Valley Voters Monday on why people should vote for the sales tax.

“It’s time, and we’re worth it to be able to support the United States Marshals Museum to move and propel us forward as Fort Smithians and really become a destination, a destination in Fort Smith, of course, but in Arkansas itself,” said Alice Alt, vice president of development for the U.S. Marshals Museum.

So far, $35 million has been raised toward construction of the Marshals Museum, but $16 million more is needed.
