Poverty is a growing issue in our region and it is a problem kids pack with them at home and bring with them to school. However, the United Way of Northwest Arkansas is dedicated to helping children find a path out of poverty.
“Our goal is to supply each child with the literal tools that they need to be successful,” United Way of NWA Communications Manager Jackson Braswell explained.
Every year school buses park in front of Walmart Supercenters in the area. Braswell said it is a call to action for the nonprofit’s annual “Fill the Bus” campaign to help children in need.
“I don’t think there’s a better feeling than showing up to school with all your supplies and knowing that you don’t have to worry about that,” Braswell shared. “And on the latter end, you don’t want any child to have that feeling that they don’t have the things they need.”
While shopping for school supplies, Braswell encourages you to pick up extras of whatever you buy for your kids so you can donate them to the cause. It is an initiative Scott Bayles with Walmart said fits in line with the company’s mission to help people live better.
“Education is key to breaking that poverty cycle and we’re committed to helping people get through that and get a great education,” Bayles explained.
“Without the support of these companies, Fill the Bus isn’t what it is,” Braswell said. “This is our eleventh year that we’ve had the Fill the Bus campaign and every single year it gets stronger and stronger.”
A number of Walmart suppliers, including Josh Saffran with Bic, are excited to join the cause and make donations of their own.
“What a great opportunity for us to be able to partner with the United Way and Walmart to ensure everyone has a great chance to start off the school year with confidence and that’s why Bic is very much involved,” Saffran offered.
“This is just a great opportunity for the community to rally around a cause that we’re passionate about in education and help these kids have all the tools they need to have a great education and live a prosperous life,” Braswell shared.
