WEB EXTRA: A Closer Look at the Autism Spectrum

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS (KFTA)– April marks Autism Awareness Month.

To increase awareness, Fox 24 is taking a closer look at Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Doctor Mark Lovell, a pediatrician with the Children’s Clinic at Har-Ber Meadows, said when looking at the autism spectrum, there are three main pillars.

The first is delayed speech, then poor socialization, and then sensory difficulties.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that symptoms vary for people with ASD.

According to the CDC, people living on the spectrum “might have average intelligence, use limited verbal language, experience intense self-stimulatory behaviors such as hand-flapping, under-react to pain and over-react to sounds, have very good gross motor skills, and have weaknesses in fine motor skills.”
