An annual spring campaign is working to encourage safe driving through work zones.
National Work Zone Awareness Week is April 8-12, 2019. This year’s theme is ‘Drive Like You Work Here.’
It’s a reminder to be extra careful when driving past construction workers on the sides of highways or roads.
With summer just around the corner, more of these work zones will pop up all over northwest Arkansas.
Sergeant Gene Page with the Bentonville Police Department said it’s drivers responsibility to use be diligent in those areas.
“There workers, they’re on the side of the road of where the cars are going by, It’s very easy for them to get caught up in their work, maybe they drift over, maybe you drift over,” Sergeant Page said. “That type of interaction is going to be devastating.”
Sergeant Page went on to say that even though the week ends on Friday (April 12) being aware shouldn’t stop there. Keep eyes on the road and put your phone down, especially when passing these zones.
