CENTER RIDGE, Ark. (KARK) – When you think of household pets, you may think of a dog, a cat, or a fish, but do you think of a cow?  A 1-ton heifer to be exact…?

One couple in Center Ridge consider their dairy cow their largest child, and while their dogs have dog houses and their cats stay inside, these pets can moooo-ve over because this cow has its own house…

Holly is a 10-year-old dairy Holstein and is lucky to be alive.

“She was given up for dead after birth,” Stan Flowers says.

Holly the cow’s mother died during birth, so in stepped her new mom, Shannon Flowers.

After bottle-feeding the 40 pound calf her first several weeks, Shannon and her husband, Stan, then took her home as their own child. And over the years, they’ve nursed holly through two fevers and four battles with cancer.

“She grew up around the garden of the house with the Great Pyrenees, thinking she was a dog – until she realized she was getting a little larger so now we have her in a house,” says Stan.

A house the 22-year retired veteran built from scratch. Stan and Shannon fixed up the room “just like a kid’s bedroom,” starting with one picture and now she even has a music box she can press with her nose and turn it on.

Stan and Shannon call Holly their spoiled child.

“She out grew her old shack I built for her earlier,” Stan says.

Buying building materials whenever they could, the Flowers became pretty famous at the local hardware stores.

“Home depot people ran to me saying, ‘You’re the one with the cow, right? We’re waiting to see that new bedroom,'” Shannon says.

A stray cat called Annie now also shares the room with Holly. The Flowers say the cow and cat are best friends.

“Sometimes, she’s on the bench and sometimes she’s on the straw with Holly” Shannon says.

Holly is ‘milking it’ for all it’s worth.

“She’s just like a little kid…shes treated like one,” Shannon says.

Now with a cozy new room complete, Stan and Shannon start the tractor and just wait until their cow comes home.

The Flowers say the joy they receive from Holly has been worth every penny and they would do it again in a hoof-beat.
