2019 Session: Feb. 26 Recognized as Alzheimer’s Awareness Day

February 26, will now be known as Alzheimer’s Awareness Day in Arkansas.

The House and Senate passed resolutions Tuesday (Feb. 26) in honor of the 60,000 Arkansans who are currently living with the disease.

State lawmakers, including Attorney General Leslie Rutledge, shared personal experiences about how Alzheimer’s is often difficult to detect early on and how it feels isolating.

The sponsor of the Senate resolution lost his mother after a 10-year battle.

“All I can say to bring awareness to this disease is that you’ll never face anything more difficult in your life than when your mom looks at you and says, ‘Who are you?'” State Senator Ricky Hill, R-Cabot, told the crowd.

The Arkansas chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association offers many resources for families, including a 24/7 helpline: 800-272-3900.
