Hampton Cove, Ala. (WZDZ) — Walk in the door of Anytime Fitness, and odds are good you’ll run into Gail Lind.
“I am 70 years old, and I am a personal fitness trainer at Anytime Fitness in Hampton Cove,” said Gail.
She’s super passion
“I’ve done over 400 pounds on the leg press. I bench press 65 pounds.”
Six years ago, it was a much different story.
“I was about 65 years old, fifty pounds heavier,” said Gail. “I had a hard time getting off the floor.”
That all changed after she started taking a circuit training class and began lifting weights. Now, she leads a circuit training class — ages ranging from 50 to 70.
“You want antiaging? The antiaging is here in the gym. Not at the cosmetic counter,” said Gail.
It’s her passion to encourage and inspire others to get healthy. It was a game changer for her.
“I don’t want to go in a nursing home,” she said. “I want to become as strong as I can. And the only way is through resistance training and you can’t be afraid of the weights.”
Weight training has also been a game changer for Kathy Watkins, who is in Gail’s class.
“Gail — she’s an inspiration,” said Kathy. “I thought — my gosh, if she can do it, I can do it.”
Kathy has lost nearly 40 pounds since she started working out a year ago.
“It’s really helped me. I can get out of my chair easily. I’ve got more energy. All my numbers for blood pressure and triglycerides came down. It’s all from the exercise,” she said.
Risa Mendelson met Gail one day while on the elliptical with a friend. They tried Gail’s class together and now strength train regularly.
“We encourage each other. So now we’ve encouraged each other to try other classes, where we’re the oldest ones there.”
Risa feels strong enough to do what she loves.
“I can play tennis now. I come to the gym everyday,” she said.
“The harder you work inside the gym, the easier life is outside the gym,” said Gail.
