Archeological Research Coming to Pea Ridge National Military Park

PEA RIDGE, Ark. (KFTA) — Archeologists with Arkansas Archeological Survey and volunteers with the Arkansas Archeological Society will conduct investigations at Pea Ridge Military Park archeological sites in June, according to a National Park Service news release.

The groups’ annual training program will be held June 9-24 and will contributes to an ongoing cooperative research and management program with the National Park Service. It will be conducted alongside the University of Arkansas Archeological field school, according to the news release.

“The public is welcome to stop by and visit on-site with the Archeologists, but please note that the Archeologists are conducting approved research in partnership with the park and that it is illegal for the public to metal detect or dig in the park at any time,” the news release states.

Archeologists will give four presentations and host an open house. Presentations will be held in the Visitor Center Auditorium starting at 6:30 pm.

The presentations are as follows:

Saturday, June 9: “The Archeology of Pea Ridge NMP” by Dr. Jamie Brandon and Dr. Carl Drexler

Tuesday, June 12: “A tour of the Pea Ridge NMP battlefield from the perspective of battlefield archeology” by Dr. Carl Drexler

Thursday, June 14: “Landscape, GIS & Remote Sensing at Pea Ridge NMP” by Dr. Jamie Lockhart

Saturday, June 16: Open House will be held to tour the archeology lab and visit one of the sites. Visitors should go to the Northeast Benton County (NEBCO) Community Center, 17823 Marshall St. (Hwy. 62) in Garfield between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Friday, June 22: “What Did We Find Out: An Overview of the 2018 Field Season at Pea Ridge” by Dr. Jamie Brandon and Dr. Carl Drexler
