Arkansas National Guard Arriving to Stump Dump Fire Today

News

The fire continues to burn underground at the Trafalgar Road site, also known as the “stump dump.”

Later today a new team will arrive to test the air quality over the area.

The Arkansas National Guard’s 61st Civil Support Team will enter the site at daybreak.

This unit was requested by the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management to monitor the air in the community that’s alongside the stump dump.

Staff Sergeant Melody Daniel joins the show to talk about how invasive the process will be for residents around the site.

The team will collect baseline data during daylight hours only.

The data collection will be accomplished using commercially available equipment with sensors for
specific hazards that have been collectively agreed upon with the Arkansas Department of Health.

Monitoring stations will be placed at the same locations where previous EPA monitoring was done, thus
minimizing any additional disruption to nearby property owners.
