When it comes to smoking and tobacco use, Arkansas ranks among the worst states in the country.

With that in mind, state lawmakers have filed several bills recently, aimed at taking on ‘Big Tobacco,’ which is the “big five” largest global tobacco industry companies.

Some of the bills involve:

  • taxes on e-cigarettes and cigarette paper
  • raising the smoking age to 21
  • directing taxpayer money to cancer research at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS)

The American Cancer Society is pushing for changes and said it is encouraged by developments it is seeing so far.

“One of the primary responsibilities of our state legislature is to make sure that we have good public health here in the state of Arkansas,” American Cancer Society’s Michael Keck said. “I am most appreciative of the fact that there’s a willingness to look at some of these issues that can be addressed, some steps that can be taken to make our state healthier.”
