Upgrades are coming to Arvest Ballpark in Springdale.
The Springdale City Council approved over $23,000 worth of new padding to protect players around the field, including foul poles, bullpens and outfield walls.
“The winters haven’t been quite as bad lately, but over spring, summer and winters now that was one of the things we looked at,” said Justin Cole, Northwest Arkansas Naturals general manager. “Really, we looked at the last couple of years is when to make that improvement, get that done and hopefully we don’t have to worry about [it] again for at least another 11 or 12 years.”
The Springdale City Planning Department said the state’s prison program will put inmates to work sewing the pads, which Director Patsy Christie claims to be a specialized product that teaches inmates a trade.
Opening day at Arvest Ballpark is 71-days out and entering the 12th season of Minor League Baseball in Northwest Arkansas.
