Avoiding the Hospital Over the Holidays

News

(KARK) Thanksgiving in the UAMS emergency room may start slow, but it gets busy quickly as patients come in with all sorts of holiday related ailments. That’s according to Dr. Rawle Seupaul.

“We may see some lacerations from some turkey carving injuries and those types of things. People peeling potatoes and sweet potatoes. You can get a decent injury from a slicer as well,” said Seupaul.

While many people may be looking to deep fry their turkey, he said that may not be only thing that could get hot.

“It’s dangerous stuff,” said Seupaul. “They can certainly burn themselves. As you know, it takes a lot of oil. It gets very hot and if you have an accident with that, it can causes some serious injuries.”

He said the holiday itself is not that bad, it’s the days after that are the busiest.

“It takes a lot for folks to come into the emergency department when they are trying to spend a special day with their family–all the good food, sports on TV , football games and all those types of things,” said Seupaul.

And while the turkey, dressing and all the trimmings are oh-so tempting, watch what you eat, so you don’t have to spend the next few days in the hospital.

“That happens all the time,” said Seupaul. “So, one of the classic things are patients that have heart failure or kidney problems. You know they are suppose to be eating special diets and once they get a higher volume or extra salt, that can cause some problems,” said Seupaul.

In the end, he said it’s about using your brain, not your stomach to help you make the best decisions this Thanksgiving.

“Thanksgiving is really a day where you spend time you spend with your family or loved ones. Enjoy that and then, certainly enjoy the food, but in moderation, especially if you know you have dietary restrictions and then play it safe,” said Seupaul.
