BELLA VISTA, Ark. (KNWA) — The underground fire burning in Bella Vista is now expected to burn out sooner than authorities first estimated.
The fire has been smoldering for years, according to Cletus Wilkins, who owns the property just north of the blaze.
Wilkins said the land has been a dumping ground for trash and chemicals for almost a decade.
Wilkins said he’s checking on the fire three times a week to make sure it stays in check.
The Bella Vista Fire Department said it’s now expected to burn out in about a year, but announced Monday that the ADEQ has asked the Environmental Protection Agency to look into it as a precaution.
