Benton County jail expansion considered

Another jail is looking at expansion options as it sees a rise in inmates.

The Benton County Detention Center is often pushing the limit on  its maximum capacity.

Currently, 669 inmates are being housed in the jail.

County leaders have explored multiple options for expansion, touring other jails to see how some ideas would work for them.

Sheriff Shawn Holloway said with the county’s growth since the jail’s opening in 1998, an expansion is needed.

“The county has increased 98% in population size and unfortunately the county jail hasn’t, but the current facility we have is a really good facility, and it has served Benton County very well for the last 20 years plus,” Holloway said. “But we’re at the point now where we are going to have to look into options to expand on to the current facility.”

Holloway said part of the solution is decreasing the number of people being incarcerated.

Right now the department has been using alternative sentencing programs to do that.
