Benton County Voters Reject Courts Building Sales Tax

Unoffical results from the Benton County special election show that voters have chose not to support a one-eighth sales tax for a new courts building.

Voting results as of 10 p.m. Tuesday show 3,714 (38 percent) voters voted for the sales tax and 6,055 (62 percent) voted against it.

This puts a halt on the potential county-wide sales tax that would have funded a new courts facility.

Over 6,000 people voted in the special election.

The courts building is estimated to cost $35 million. The county hoped to raise $25 million of that with the temporary sales tax, which would last four and a half years.

The other $10 million would be funded with existing county funds.

Benton County Judge Barry Moerhing said this is the lowest incremental tax possible.
