Bentonville Animal Task Force Hands Over Executive Summary to City Council

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (KNWA) — The Bentonville Animal Shelter Task Force gave its recommendations to the city council after nearly six months of preparation.

Currently Bentonville doesn’t have its own animal shelter, and is in a 3-year contract with Centerton to use theirs.

The animal task force brought an executive summary to the city council Tuesday night.

It was a culmination of all the work done on behalf of the 11-member task force.

There have been 48 meetings held so far, and a survey that reached more than 970 Bentonville citizens.

The task force is asking the city continuing research through 2019, and for $350,000 dollars to design the shelter.

Bill Burckart is on both the city council and the task force.

He says these plans will enable the city to be done with construction by may of 2021.

That’s when the city’s contract runs out with Centerton.

“I think what came out last night was the outpour of citizens that came to the meeting. It’s been consistent and it’s nice to see where something starts from nothing, and through citizen support we have developed this task force and here we are coming to the conclusion of it. The excitement is more than it was when we started this,” Burckart said.

The executive summary shows the total expenses would cost the city $585,000 annually.

That would include adoption services, spay and neuter services, services for cats, volunteer opportunities, and healthy intake.

Private partners would provide other services like grooming and bathing, and access to trails.

Burckart says two locations for the animal shelter are being considered, but nothing has been decided on.

The Bentonville City Council will vote whether to reauthorize the task force at the next meeting on November 27.
