Bentonville High Schools: Students May Be Required to Wear ID Next Fall

News

Bentonville school district is looking to amp up security measures for its high schools.

Come this fall, Bentonville High and Bentonville West students may have to wear something extra to school: their i-d badges.

“It came down to what can we do internally to protect our students even further.” said Bentonville School Board Member, Rebecca Powers.

It’s a simple concept: require every student to wear their school i.d. around their neck. And it’s something the Bentonville School District said they hope makes a difference.

“We need to be able to identify which student is supposed to be there and which one’s not and this is just one step in the right direction.” said Powers.

Next Monday, the Bentonville school board will vote on whether or not students will be required to wear their student i-d. It’s all part of an effort to increase security measures.

“I know a lot of the parents are super concerned with school security right now. It’s just going to be one thing a little bit harder for someone who wants to do harm to our students.” said Powers.

Springdale schools implemented this very thing 3 years ago.The principal of Harber High School, Danny Brackett, said it’s something he saw as necessary.

“We had a couple of incidents where we had some students in our cafeteria who were not our students, matter of fact were younger adults in their 20s so that started the conversation of how do we identify our students.” said Brackett.

Brackett said one of the challenges they’ve faced is making sure the i-ds are not easily duplicated.

“We change the colors every year but we think we need to do even more of that. Those are things that we are trying to perfect and it is an ongoing process.” said Brackett.

Bentonville school district said perfecting their safety measures is the ultimate goal.
“We’re trying to do everything we can, think ahead for what we can do to protect students.” said Powers.

If the school board approves the measure next Monday, the district administration would begin outlining procedures for the student identification badges.
