Best Ways to Avoid the Flu

(KODE) — If you think an awful lot of people you work with or maybe go to school with are sick, it’s not your imagination. But you don’t have to suffer the same fate.

Anytime someone where you live, work, or go to school is sick and you go to some of the same places they do, and touch some of the same thing they do, you could get sick too. The best defense against getting sick during the cold and flu season is washing your hands. Dr. Bob Tyler, a hospitalist at Freeman Neosho says to think of any surface that you touch, including a coffee pot or even soda machine, as a potential reservoir of germs.

“You just have to be careful about what you’re doing, for instance, the water fountains, making sure you’re always washing your hands. If you’re at a place where everybody else is eating or getting their drinks or touching things that you could touch as well, it’s just good handwashing and making sure you stay away from those places if you can,” says Dr. Bob Tyler, Freeman Neosho Hospital Hospitalist.

And if you’re in an area where you can’t wash your hands, Dr. Tyler says use antibacterial gel. He says it can be in a company’s own best interest to furnish that because it can reduce illness in the workplace. And he says you too, can be the reason someone else gets sick.

“To make sure that if you’re sick, don’t go anywhere where you can make other people sick,” says Dr. Bob Tyler.
