Breakfast Buzz: Gym Membership Step Closer to Become Tax Deduction

Your gym membership is a step closer to being a tax break. Congressional lawmakers recently advanced a bill that would give favorable tax treatment to things like exercise classes and workouts at the gym. If passed, gym memberships and certain other exercise costs could qualify as medical expenses for tax purposes. However, taxpayers would be required to itemize their deductions. The tax break would be limited to $500 for individuals and  $1,000 for heads of households and couples who file joint tax returns.

The lemonade stand a staple of summer that sometimes loses its steam. Then there's Bentlee Martinez's Bakery stand. Since school's been out Bentlee has set up "Bam's Bakery Shop" about a month ago Bentlee and her family were downtown and saw a homeless couple sleeping in an alley. They gave them burgers and blankets but it also gave Bentlee an idea. Now, every dollar Bentlee brings in from her cupcake corner will go to Boise's homeless. Her mom says Bentlee's goal is to help as many as she can. She also says that first elderly couple they met in the alley last month has since found a place to live.

$83 billion is expected to be spent on back to school shopping. Most of the projected $83 billion is to be spent on supplies, clothing and electronics. The national retail federation says at least half the parents of school-age children have started shopping.

Looking ahead you can help local students get ready for school. The United Way of Northwest Arkansas will be teaming up with Walmart for its annual Fill the Bus Drive. You can donate items on August 3 and 4 at 10 different Walmart Supercenter locations in NWA.  Some of the supplies needed include backpacks, binders, and pencils. Fill the bus has helped over 35,000 students throughout the years.
