Chief Meteorologist, Dan Skoff surprised Mr. Jamie Walker at Hellstern Middle School as a Brightest Classroom. Mr. Walker received a $500 Walmart/Sam’s Club gift card for school supplies.
Our class would use the $500 for a makerspace to build our own solar-powered USB chargers. The solar-powered USB charger would let us charge anything USB when there is no plug in nearby. A makerspace is a space designed and outfitted with the tools necessary to create our solar-powered USB chargers. We want to place several of these completed chargers in our school emergency kit. It doesn’t stop there! We also plan to use our electrical skills and makerspace to investigate LED’s as we also have a plan to create LED-powered, sound sensitive lightboxes to be used in an upcoming school event. Our makerspace will need a work table, basic hand tools, electrical tools, and a power drill. Additionally, we will use these funds to buy the materials necessary to create our solar-powered chargers and LED-powered lightboxes.
