Brightest Classroom: Ms. Allyson Bailey, Central Junior High School

News

Chief Meteorologist, Dan Skoff surprised Ms. Allyson Bailey at Central Junior High School as a Brightest Classroom. Ms. Mackey received a $500 Walmart/Sam’s Club gift card for school supplies.

Central Jr. High school students came to Mrs. Fohner and myself wanting to cut back on the paper waste in our school.  We partnered with Boston Mountain Solid Waste District to develop and carry out a successful recycling program.  This program has been developed as a pilot program for the entire Springdale school district.  Through our program we recycle more than 400 pounds of paper a week.  Students have learned what it takes to run an efficient program and continue to help our school and community.  They have studied the different materials that can recycled, and they have learned the process that the materials go through to be turned in to usable products again.  We have discussed what contaminates can harm our recycling program, and what steps we can take to prevent that from happening.  We would like to expand our program by being able to recycle more than paper.  Students have noticed the need for cardboard, and plastic recycling within our school.  This grant could kick-start the expansion of the student-led project.
