Cats Susceptible to Deer Disease

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA) — Your pet could be susceptible to a deadly disease carried by deer.

Cats can be affected by Chronic Wasting Disease, according to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

Veterinarians say you should avoid letting your cat eat deer meat, especially if you know it’s contaminated.

The risk of cats getting CWD from deer feces is low.

“Probably not as high of a concern just because they’re not likely to eat very much of that but if that’s a behavior your pet demonstrates then I’d probably keep them on a leash,” said Dr. Jennifer Ballard, state wildlife veterinarian for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

There’s no research showing dogs are susceptible to chronic waste disease.

More than 200 cases of  CWD in deer have been confirmed in Arkansas with a handful in Benton, Washington, Madison and Sebastian counties.
