Van Buren fire rescued a child after he was swept away by floodwaters Wednesday, June 5.
Sgt. Jonathan Wear with Van Buren police said the child was found in a culvert behind Colton’s Steak House & Grill, 33 Access Road.
The child is in good condition according to police.
The 9-year-old was swept into a drainage ditch and underneath a highway, according to police.
The boy’s younger brother flagged down a driver on the access road and that driver called for help.
The brother told the driver his sibling fell into this drainage ditch.
The child was swept over 200 yards under the access road and under both lanes of traffic on Highway 40, according to Wear.
“You can see how fast the water is moving in this culvert,” said Wear.
The boy was found near Rena elementary and clinging to a grapevine, said police.
“There were no major injuries … just a couple of scratches,” said Wear.
It’s unclear how the boy fell into the culvert, according to police, but the child does live in the area.
