In light of recent cases of child rape and abuse, the community wants to start the conversation with children before it’s too late.
The average age of a child experiencing abuse is just three years old, according to the Benton County Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC).
Natalie Tibbs with the CAC said teaching kids how to properly say and explain what is happening to them is just as important as knowing what to look for and how to get a child out of the situation.
“It’s more prevalent than the fire safety drills, tornado drills, and looking both ways before you cross the street,” Tibbs said. “I would rather get everybody involved in it than for everybody just to assume oh, nothing is going on there. Then the abuse continues. We would much rather that than the alternative.”
If you or someone you know is a victim of sexual assault, call the Arkansas Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-482-5964.
The Children’s Advocacy Center of Benton County is located in Rogers.
