City Officials Ask for Help with New Welcoming Fayetteville Plan

News

Fayetteville is looking for ways to become more inclusive and welcoming to immigrants that move to the city.

City officials are asking for the public’s help in incorporating their Welcoming Fayetteville Plan, which provides better ways to integrate new Americans. Fayetteville is the first town in Arkansas to become a welcoming city.

Now the city is coming up with a plan to present to the city council in early 2018.

“Our mission is to include and integrate new Americans in our community, so that we breakdown barriers and make everyday life easier for them,” said Augusta Branham with the City of Fayetteville.

Fayetteville is working hard to see the number of immigrant community members rise as well as help them succeed once they’re here.

“Here in Fayetteville, we want to be known for our hospitality, and our inclusivity. We want to make sure we’re not only attracting, but retaining new Americans here<‘ explained Branham.

Becoming a welcoming city means making the transition for immigrants easier, whether you’re documented, undocumented or a refugee.

After Fayetteville became the first designated welcoming city in the natural state, they took that effort a step further.

The city approached different sectors within Fayetteville; like housing transportation and the chamber of commerce to get their input on the plan.

Chris Decker, with the chamber of commerce said he was able to explain how to interweave different communities into Fayetteville.

“We not only want to be welcoming, but we wanted to connect,” said Decker. “As a community, we are all about having skills. Having your passions and being committed to being here. So we want to be welcoming to anybody and everybody. We don’t care where you’re from.”

Moving forward, over the next few months, Fayetteville will gather all their public input, incorporate ideas and present the Welcoming Plan to city council in 2018.

The first event for the city to get people’s input is this Saturday at the famer’s market from 8 a/m/ to 11:30.
