Developers, Mayor Hope New Downtown Square Boosts Johnson in NWA

News

Johnson is building a Downtown Square to further its footprint in Northwest Arkansas. This development will help put Johnson on the map.

Ward Davis, Johnson Square Developer, “There was a lot of people who live in the area but they didn’t really have a real focal point for community.”

Two and a half years ago land owners in Johnson approached the city about developing this plot of land right off of Interstate 49. The idea, a Downtown Square, complete with restaurants, shops and homes.

Chris Keeney, Mayor, Johnson, “The community has been very involved since the inception of Johnson square. The feedback has been phenomenal. They have been very supportive.”

The main goal is to get people to stop driving through Johnson and actually stop and hang out in Johnson.

“There are plenty of folks that are very closeby that they can walk to our town center, they can hop on a bike and come to visit,” said Davis.

While Johnson Square has been in the works for a few years, it will only take four or five years to turn this rural land into a Northwest Arkansas destination.

Mayor Chris Keeney hopes Johnson Square can add to the rich downtown culture, already thriving across Northwest Arkansas cities.

“When you isolate anything it may become unique on its own but it never reaches its full potential until people can get to it. Each one has an identity and that’s really what we are trying to build is a place and with that place comes identity,” said Keeney.

It’s a place Developer Ward Davis hopes Johnson residents will be proud to call home.

“The most exciting thing about building this neighborhood will be when people take the framework and build it into a true neighborhood that’s the most interesting,” said Davis.
