The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Arkansas organization helps partner children with adult mentors.
Whitney Houston famously sang ‘I believe the children are our future.’ It’s also worth noting that those who invest in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Arkansas are really investing in our future.
“I just wanted to build a relationship with someone younger than me and be able to invest in someone,” Big Sister Emily Collins shared.
That someone is 13-year-old Kuryanna. Emily was matched with her almost a year ago through Big Brothers Big Sister of Northwest Arkansas. That mentor role has already helped Kuryanna to make some big strides.
“It gives me enough courage to be happy and speak to everybody, “Little Sister Kuryanna explained.
That new skill came in handy while they took part in a tour of the Razorback football team facilities with other Bigs and Littles, but they also hang out in the kitchen together a fair amount too.
“We really like to spend time baking cookies, trying out different recipes and mostly just hanging out at the house cooking and doing things like that,” Emily said.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of NWA Development Director Sarah Van Vleck explained those common interests are important in the matching process.
“When we put the Big and the Little together, we put together people with similar interests,” Van Vleck offered. “So, I always say, we put the athlete with the athlete and the artist with the artist.”
Van Vleck says they cater to those specific interests with free events like the one the group of Bigs and Littles were at when we caught up with them.
“Watching the Razorback football team practice — which is like this awesome, unique opportunity,” shared. “And they got to tour the locker room and do all that. So that was just really fun.”
Big Brother Nate Krehbiel says these events help him bond with his Little Kendrick.
“[We] just like kinda’ have something to talk about, something to build on and kind of see if he’s like interested in something,” Nate explained.
And Kendrick is all smiles about having Nate in his life.
“He’s nice and funny and he, he spoils me,” Kendrick shared.
