The Sebastian County Election Committee met Monday to discuss early voting sites for the upcoming special election.
The special election will be held in March.
Voters will decide whether or not to pass a one-cent sales tax increase to fund construction on the long awaited United States Marshals Museum.
The sales tax would be in effect from July 2019 to March 2020.
So far, $35 million dollars has been raised toward construction of the Marshals Museum, but $16 million more is needed.
“The City of Fort Smith, I believe, has only asked for one early voting site — that’s G8 here in the courthouse in Sebastian County in Fort Smith,” said David Damron, vice chairman of the Sebastian County Election Commission. “We’re gonna go back and ask them if they want any other early voting sites.”
The city is pursuing the sales tax because museum construction money could not be fully obtained through grants and public funding.
