Elderly Man Sprayed in the Eyes with Wasp Spray During Home Burglary

News

A person is in custody for a residential burglary that involved the subject getting attacked with wasp spray and hit over the head, according to Fayetteville police.

Nineteen-year-old Seth Benz was arrested for Aggravated Residential Burglary hours later in connection with the crime, according to a Washing County booking record.

The incident happened Monday, January 7, shortly before 11:30 p.m. at the 1600 block of N. Salem, according to a court affidavit.

According to police, the elderly resident said two people broke into his home, sprayed his eyes twice with wasp spray — once before, and after — a t-shirt was placed over his head.  He told police he was placed in his wheelchair while one suspect hit his head several times, causing cuts and bruising near his eye, and breaking his glasses.

Meanwhile, the other suspect stole a big screen television and other items, according to the report.

The victim described the suspects to police as two men, dressed in dark clothing, wearing hoodies, and scarfs that covered their faces.

The victim told police one of the suspects had a similar build to a young man who recently lived with him, Seth Benz, but was forced to move out because he couldn’t pay rent.

Officers checked the area and found Benz running from the area in an effort to avoid them.

Once they caught up with Benz, police said they noticed he was not being direct in answering their questions, for example, giving a false name.

Benz was arrested for obstruction and taken into custody.  He was read his rights at the police station, according to the report.

Upon questioning, police hinted they believe he may be involved in the burglary.  When police asked where he was during the burglary, Benz asked for a lawyer, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Benz is jailed for Aggravated Residential Burglary, 2nd Degree Battery, Governmental Obstruction and Loitering. His court date is Wednesday, January 9.

Benz refused to offer details to police about the second person involved.
