Ex NWA Gang Member Comments on Gang Violence

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (KFTA)– Tyler Garska’s death sparks the question of the prevalence of gang violence in Northwest Arkansas.

Despite allegations, police are not confirming the shooting at the Motel 8 last week was gang related.

But, the victim’s family is opening up, saying the violence in Northwest Arkansas is all too real.

Skyler Mullins was a part of a Crip gang for 15 years, joining in his teens.

It’s a group that walks the streets of Northwest Arkansas.

A little over two months ago, Mullins finished an eight year sentence for gang related crimes.

Mullins says the gang life is serious.

Just over the weekend,18-year-old Walter Bryan was arrested after shooting and killing Tyler Garska.

The mother and the girlfriend of Garska tells KFTA both men were involved in gangs.

The victim’s girlfriend said, “If you think this gang banging life is cool, and doing dope, it’s not im just so tired of it.”

Sgt. Gene Page of the Bentonville Police Department said, “Even though this was a rare incident, we still need to keep our eyes open and be aware that these things do occur in other cities and they can come into any area at any given time.”

While police can’t confirm the shooting was gang related,  Sgt. Page says it’s important for families to be aware of kids going down the wrong path.
After speaking with Mullins, he reflects on the fact that he made it out alive.
The ex-gang member asked himself, “Do I want to do this for the rest of my life? Rob people? Shoot people? Or just be myself, get a job like a real man?”
