Monday, February 18, marked the first full weekday affected by closures on Exit 86 off Interstate 49.
The northbound on-ramp and the southbound off-ramp will stay closed until late May, according to the Arkansas Department of Transportation.
This closure will give crews time to prep an additional highway exit that will open just north of Exit 86.
“I think if you live in the area you have those certain routes that you use,” said Sgt. Gene Page, public information officer for the Bentonville Police Department. “Now is a good time to think about the alternate routes … then just be sure you know that there will be slowdowns.”
This closure will impact the almost 50,000 drivers who use the exit every day, but police said it will be worth it.
“It comes with the positive growth in the area, so it’s a good thing to have. We just need to work through some of the construction phases and it’s going to make it a lot easier on all of us,” said Page.
Here is a list of detours:
- Motorists west of J Street, who need access to I-49 North, should travel north on J Street to State Highway 72 to Exit 88.
- Motorists east of J Street and west of Dixieland Road, who need access to I-49 North, should take I-49 South at Exit 86 and travel to Exit 85 and return Northbound on I-49.
- Motorists traveling southbound on I-49, who need access to areas in the vicinity of Exit 86, should travel to Exit 85 and return northbound on I-49.
- Motorists east of Dixieland Road, who need to access I-49 North, should travel south on Dixieland Road to U.S. 71B (Walnut Street) and continue west to I-49 at Exit 85.
