Christmas morning came early today in Farmington. One church is teaching the community the value of giving rather than receiving this holiday season.

Brand New Church in Farmington handed out free bikes to hundreds of families on Saturday.

For some, the thought behind the gift shows the true meaning of Christmas.

“That is the only thing she wrote on her Christmas list is a bike,” Maria Berentos said.

The holidays may be tough on people’s wallets.

“My daughter has been asking for a bike since last year and we couldn’t afford it,” Berentos said.

But it was all smiles Saturday morning.

“We don’t have a car so we are walking through this right now,” Nicole Stidam said. “This is their Christmas morning right now.”

Brand New Church in Farmington wanted to lend a hand to those families.

It saved twenty-thousand dollars in donations all year to purchase and build over 400 bikes to then give them away at no cost.

“We should do it everyday in our lives because it is something god wants us to do,” Mayor of Farmington Ernie Penn said. “Count our blessings in our lives everyday.”

The reactions were priceless.

“I stood with a family of four kids who just kept apologizing over and over “We wish we could do more but thank you,” Pastor of Brand New Church Shannon O’Dell said. “They are struggling. There are ups and downs for different people so what a blessing.”

“This is a blessing for us,” Arlene Jones said. “Watching the joy on the grand-babies faces when they open the gifts, there is no better feeling when fullfilling something that they asked for.”

Next stop for these bikes…a spot underneath the Christmas tree.

‘It’s one thing to receive a great gift but to give a great gift,” O’Dell said. “It is what Christmas is all about to watch the smiles and even the tears on these faces.”

The church tells KNWA they plan to continue this tradition as long as they can.

Next year they plan to double the amount of bikes they handed out this year.
